“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen;
All day and all night they will never keep silent
You who remind the LORD, take no rest for yourselves;
And give Him no rest until He establishes
And makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” Isaiah 62:6-7
A Watchman's Commitment
In ancient days, Watchmen were stationed on city walls 24 hours a day. They waited for the enemy and provided security and protection for the people as they worked and slept. They also provided any needed repairs on the wall. This was an important task. Failure to perform this task could result in their deaths as well as the death of the residents in the city, so the Watchmen were carefully chosen.
The Watchman's Assignments
The Watchman's responsibility was to remind the people of God's promises. People tend to forget God's promises. The very presence of the Watchmen reminded God's people that they were His Chosen People, and they belonged to Him. The Watchmen shouted scripture and psalms of praise to the LORD.
The Watchman's job was to remind God of His people. God desires fellowship with his people. Even though He knows everything about each of us, He enjoys a relationship with us. Parents enjoy hearing stories over and over from their children, even though they have heard them many times. Talking and sharing deepens the bond of love between parents and children. God also wants to have a love relationship with us. He commanded us to “Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thess. 5:17
The Watchman has to be persistent in his watch. Isaiah 62:6 says, “All day and all night they will never keep silent.” It was this persistence that Christ commanded: “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!' " And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?" Luke 18:1-82
How encouraging it will be for church members to know that 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Watchmen will be interceding for them to the Lord. What a comfort it will be to know that petitions will be offered hourly on behalf of those who are sick, in danger, or in difficulty. These Watchmen will have a divine appointment and a definite assignment.
